The Times Need the Art a-Changin’

My father grew up in the south. He was a young man in the 50’s and 60’s when Martin Luther King, Rosa Park, Ralph Abernathy and so many others fought in the civil rights movement. When I was growing up, we used to gather in our living room and sing the songs from the civil rights movement, songs of the people, songs of struggle. When we would sing, I always felt something powerful in them. I could feel the weight of those songs; a weight that came from the stories behind them. Continue reading
